Dr. Arthur Wittenberg: A Legacy of Philanthropy, Justice, and Empowerment
I CAN OWN A HOME was created by our founder Dr. Arthur Wittenberg’s philanthropic efforts, driven by his unwavering belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to own a home. This organization is the living expression of Dr. Wittenberg’s compassion, wisdom, and lifelong commitment to uplifting others—especially those whom society has overlooked or left behind.
Early Beginnings and Real Estate Success
Born and raised in New Orleans, Dr. Wittenberg learned the values of faith, determination, and service from an early age. At just 18, he purchased, renovated, and sold his first home, discovering a natural talent for real estate and design. By 25, he had flipped enough properties to retire early, but his true calling was to use his gifts to help others achieve what he had accomplished.
Overcoming Adversity and Championing Justice
Dr. Wittenberg’s journey was not without hardship. He faced significant legal and personal challenges—experiences that deepened his empathy for those struggling with the legal and financial systems. Rather than be defeated, he became a powerful advocate for justice, civil rights, and homeowner education, mastering the law so he could empower others to defend their rights and reclaim their dreams.
A Family of Trailblazers
Dr. Wittenberg’s quest for equality and justice is woven into his family’s DNA. He is a direct descendant of Bass Reeves, the legendary lawman and real-life inspiration for the Lone Ranger, whose courage and sense of justice shaped the family’s values for generations. Dr. Wittenberg is also the cousin of NFL football legend Walter Payton, whose determination and sportsmanship are a source of family pride and inspiration. The Wittenberg family’s deep passion for education has nurtured a love of learning, achievement, and service—a legacy that Dr. Wittenberg carries forward in every aspect of his work.
He is also the nephew of Marguerite Nellie Wittenberg (Margaret Whitten), a celebrated actress who redefined the image of Black women in Hollywood. Like his aunt, Dr. Wittenberg is known for his charisma, creativity, and ability to inspire lasting change.
A Multifaceted Leader
- Expertise: Dr. Wittenberg is a Federal law, and Constitution expert, trust specialist, and real estate professional. He is the creator of Civil Rights Advocates and My Brothers Keeper Legal Protector, organizations dedicated to legal education and support.
- Educator and Author: He has authored several books on real estate, law, and home design, sharing practical knowledge to empower others.
- Creative Spirit: Known as the “Harry Houdini of home decorating,” he is skilled in woodworking, furniture making, and culinary arts, with a passion for sharing the traditions of his New Orleans heritage.
